GPC Electronics implements latest phase of RoHS program

Sydney - March 22, 2006

GPC Electronics implemented the latest phase in its RoHS compliance program by commissioning new equipment capable of doing lead-free selective soldering. This will supersede the existing wave soldering processes that are used for through-hole components.

Over the last 12 months, GPC Electronics has been implementing the systems and processes needed to handle the complexities of RoHS. This included acquiring new manufacturing equipment, installing RoHS compliant processes, developing electronic tracking systems within SAP, and a host of other activities.

John Soh, Quality Manager, said “Some customers think that RoHS is simply about replacing components in their Bills-of-Material with lead-free ones. In fact it’s much, much more than that.”

RoHS or the Restriction of Hazardous Substances is a directive adopted in February 2003 by the European Union (EU) and takes effect on July 1, 2006. Each EU member state will enact its own RoHS legislation using the directive as a guide.

RoHS restricts the use of 6 substances:

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Hexavalent Chromium
  • PBB
  • PBDE

PBB and PBDE are flame-retardants used in some plastics.

John Soh said, “We are now well positioned to manage the RoHS issues that customers will face as they race to meet the 1 July 2006 deadline for shipping compliant products to the EU.”

GPC Electronics has been working with its customers to help them with issues like BoM scrubbing, compliance documentation and so on, well in advance of the deadline, so that product supply is not interrupted.
